Book Review: The Power of the Other by Dr. Henry Cloud
Dr. Henry Cloud is an acclaimed leadership expert, psychologist and best selling author. I have met and listened to Dr. Cloud several times as he has been a regular keynote speaker at the Convoy of Hope annual “Vision Summit” that I attend. Also, I feel some vague and lowly affinity toward him as he is a coach also— albeit with a number of Fortune 100 CEOs.
His latest book, “The Power of the Other” is a follow up to his other two incredibly insightful and successful books, “Boundaries” and “Integrity” – both of which I also recommend. He digs deep into how people become successful in both their business and personal lives. I promise this is not just the latest run-of-the-mill self-help book. It is all about who you allow, or who you seek out for that matter, to have influence and power over you. So many of us hitch our wagon to the wrong people. This book identifies four types of relationships, three of which are unhealthy and must be avoided at all cost. He uses real life case studies and story-telling that makes a compelling, yet fun read.
After reading this book, I can count five (literally on one hand) “others” that have had major influence over my success, personal growth, performance and leadership skills. Conversely, I can also identify relationships and other toxic associations that looking back, caused unpleasant and in a few cases, disastrous consequences.
Bottom line – without healthy relationships, you limit your potential and growth. Talent and initiative are not enough. Read this book and you will see why.
